U-value, Glass & IGU Testing

U-Value Testing

Building regulations in the UK, specifically Document L, set standards for the energy performance of buildings, focusing on the conservation of fuel and power. The regulations establish maximum U-values for windows and doors to ensure that new buildings and renovations meet energy efficiency standards.

These values reflect the UK government’s commitment to improving the energy efficiency of buildings, reducing carbon emissions, and ensuring sustainable construction practices. For precise and up-to-date regulations, refer to the latest approved documents from the UK Government’s Planning Portal or the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

BFRC is a UKAS accredited testing laboratory (number 20057). BFRC is also a UK Approved Body (number 8543) which means your U Value reports can be used for UKCA marking.

Glass / IGU Testing

Anyone manufacturing Insulated Glass Units (IGUs) in the UK is required to comply with BS EN 1279. BS EN 1279-6:2018 outlines the minimum required Factory Production Control (FPC), and within this FPC is a requirement to have IGUs tested by an outside body on an annual or biannual basis, known as the Periodic test.

In addition if an IGU manufacturer wishes to change one of the components to an alternative supplier or material, then a “periodic test” may also be required according to BS EN 1279-1:2018, Annex D in order to confirm the manufacturers ability to successfully use that particular component.

In line with these requirements, BFRC Testing is able to carry out periodic testing and Inspection as follows:-

  • Visual inspection and measurement of the IGU sealant geometry (cf the System Description)
  • Moisture Penetration Index (I) after the short climate test
  • Gas concentration before and after the short climate test
  • BS EN 1279-6:2018 Table A3, Fogging Test according to BS EN 1279-4:2018 Annex C
