Energy Rating & U-value Certification

Product Certification

The British Fenestration Rating Council is the UK’s most trusted and widely recognised rating organisation for verifying the energy performance of windows and doors. In 1997, BFRC was founded to establish the window energy rating system for the UK, to raise standards and drive performance in the industry.

Energy Rating Certification

BFRC assesses the energy performance of windows and doors and gives them a rating between A++ and E. Genuine BFRC energy rated products should be labelled with a small official sticker on the inside of the frame; outlining the energy rating, certified company name and BFRC membership number.

The BFRC energy rating is an energy balance of positive contributions from solar gain minus the negative factors of thermal heat loss and air leakage. As with all energy rating labels, the performance indicated provides a method of comparing one product against another.

Benefits of the BFRC energy rating scheme:

  • A verified method of achieving compliance with building regulations
  • The rainbow energy rating label is widely recognised and utilised
  • BFRC has a vast amount of technical knowledge and industry experience
  • BFRC approved Simulators individually are required to demonstrate their competence on an ongoing basis
  • The end user can check live licences via the BFRC website
  • BFRC energy rating provides a marketing advantage

U-Value Certification

A U-value, also known as thermal transmittance, is a key measure used in the construction and building industry to evaluate the thermal performance of a window or door. It indicates the rate at which heat passes through a material or assembly of materials.

The BFRC U Value scheme was introduced to provide accurate, certified U Values for manufacturers. Our scheme allows manufacturers to demonstrate the credibility of their U Values; From verification of calculations, to auditing of factory production. The validity of U Value certificates can be checked on the BFRC website.

The Scheme itself has a number of unique advantages:

  • Under the BFRC product certification scheme your U-values will be independently verified.
  • BFRC U-values data can be used by SAP assessors for new build dwellings calculations.
  • As part of the requirements of the scheme you will have a BFRC Approved Body report which can also be used for your UKCA marking (BFRC Approved Body number 8543).
  • If you are already audited by BFRC for your Energy Ratings, this audit will cover the U-value Scheme for no additional cost.
